What makes employees go that extra mile when it comes to work ? To go beyond what is just expected ? To show up fully and see work as meaningful ? To feel loyal & trusted at the workplace ? To receive critical feedback positively ? To show up at work with joy & enthusiasm ? Well… all these are facets of social wellness at the workplace. In corporations that focus on employees' social wellness, employees feel a sense of belonging & trust. Here, employees are more productive, have better retention spans & have healthy relationships with peers & authorities, which eventually impacts the growth & success of companies. But what can corporations do to ensure the social wellbeing of their employees ? Here are a few ways:
1. Weekly Check-in and Sharing Circles - Psychological wellbeing is essential to ensure that employees feel relaxed & manage the pressures of work efficiently. Weekly or daily check-ins followed by warm up games & sharing circles are a good way of seeing that employees feel heard, responsible & cared for, also helping them develop a healthy relationship with colleagues.
2. Focus on Physical Health - Group workouts, yoga workshops, community gyms, participating in marathons, setting up a sports club… making employees exercise together & putting focus on physical health is a good way to ensure that they have fun at work, at the same time remain healthy, fresh & energized. A healthy body & mind is also a home for adventure, productivity & creative energy.
3. Focus on festivities - Companies should encourage a culture of celebrating birthdays, work anniversaries & common festivals at work, this makes the employees feel valued & share a sense of community. Sending gifts, handwritten notes, bringing snacks etc. are good ways of sharing joy at work & building healthy peer relationships.
4. Organizing Company Retreats - one of the best ways to build a good relationship with employees & know them better is to travel with them. Organizing company retreats can be a great way to build relationships, relax & rejuvenate, opening up room for fun & adventure for employees. A trip outside the workplace, once in a while, will surely boost the productivity, creativity & enthusiasm of the employees.
5. Setup wellness committees - led by employees themselves, these committees can focus on the emotional, physical & psychological wellbeing of all employees working in the organization. They can tie up with wellness experts & companies & organize events weekly, monthly or annually. They can also start programs like Recognition & Appreciation Initiatives that focus on the contribution, milestones & successes of employees thereby fostering an environment of mutual support, encouragement and positivity.
